I don’t know the statistics here but a large majority of people now days have excess abdominal fat. The initial problem people have with their tummy fat is that its not very appealing or that it’s covering their abs, but this is not where the problem actually lies.
What people don’t know is that this fat has the potential to be a major health risk!!
Studies have shown that abdominal fat in particular is very detrimental to your health in more ways that most of the fat that covers your body. There are 2 types of fat that develop on your abdomen. The first type is the called subcutaneous fat and lies directly beneath the skin and on top of your abdominal muscles. This is the fat that covers up your rippling abs. The second type of fat is called visceral fat, this fat lies deeper in the abdomen beneath your muscle and surrounding organs. This is the fat that gives you a beer belly look where you have a bulging but firm belly.
Both of these types of fat can be detrimental to your health but ultimately it’s excessive visceral fat that is the health risk. So what is high intensity cardio? Basically it’s like doing any normal cardio exercise except instead of cycling for 30 min you structure it more like this. Warm up – 1 minute, fast as you can – 1 minute, medium pace – 30 sec, fast – 1 min, medium – 30 sec. You get the idea, you are varying your speeds to create bursts where you go full pace and then slow down, then burst, then slow. Using high intensity also means that you don’t have to train quite as long although you should begin with 5-10 minutes and increase it slowly as you become more fit.
